About the Evening Mail
Independent NYC journalism since 1867. No corporate owners. No sponsored content. Just reporters who live in the five boroughs covering the stories that matter.
Our History
The original New York Evening Mail was founded in 1867 and published continuously until 1924, serving generations of New Yorkers during one of the city's most transformative eras. The paper covered everything from the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge to the political machinations of Tammany Hall, from the rise of Wall Street to the daily lives of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island.
During its 57-year run, the Evening Mail established itself as a voice for the working people of New York. It was known for its evening edition timing-hitting newsstands just as workers were heading home-and for its accessible, straightforward reporting style that made news digestible for a broad audience.
Today, we carry that legacy forward as an independently owned digital publication. We've embraced modern technology and publishing platforms, but our mission remains the same: to serve New Yorkers with original, in-depth journalism focused on the stories that matter to people who live, work, and raise families in this city.
Our Mission
"To provide New Yorkers with essential, original journalism that informs, explains, and investigates the issues shaping our city-from City Hall to the corner bodega, from Wall Street to Washington Heights-without fear, favor, or corporate interference."
New York City has never had a shortage of news outlets, but it has suffered from a decline in truly local journalism. The big papers cover big stories, national outlets parachute in for dramatic events, and hyperlocal blogs come and go. What's missing is sustained, professional coverage of the issues that affect everyday New Yorkers.
That's the gap we aim to fill. We cover the MTA meetings that determine your commute. The City Council votes that affect your rent. The small business openings and closings that change your neighborhood's character. The school board decisions that shape your children's education.
We believe that informed citizens make better decisions-about where to live, how to vote, where to eat, and how to engage with their community. Our job is to give you the information you need.

Our Independence
Independence isn't just a talking point for us-it's the foundation of everything we do. Here's what that means in practice:
- 1 Independently owned and operated
No corporate parent company. No hedge fund owners. No private equity. Just journalists doing journalism.
- 2 Zero outside investors
We're not beholden to venture capitalists or wealthy donors with agendas. Our only obligation is to our readers.
- 3 No sponsored content or paid posts-ever
If you see an article on our site, it's because our editors decided it was newsworthy. Not because someone paid for it.
- 4 No paywall
Local news should be accessible to everyone. We're supported by advertising, not subscription barriers.
- 5 Reporters who live in the five boroughs
Our team rides the subway, shops at neighborhood stores, and experiences the same city as our readers. We're not outsiders looking in.
Our Location
The New York Evening Mail is headquartered in the Flatiron District, in the heart of Manhattan. We chose this location deliberately-it's a neighborhood that embodies the energy, diversity, and ambition of New York City.
Our newsroom is steps from Madison Square Park, surrounded by the mix of old New York architecture and modern development that characterizes the city we cover. It's accessible by multiple subway lines, which is fitting for a publication that believes public transportation is the lifeblood of NYC.
